Astronaut Reveals Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the flight, including elevated attention for her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm established by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
