Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise
New research suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
