Much like Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the previous evening, the home side blew the visitors aside at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil victory for their manager's side due to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that truly announced their leadership claims as they strengthened their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for United

This outcome signalled back-to-back league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, placing them a significant margin off the top team with their trophy ambitions hanging by a thread.

United’s ability to manage league and European football with a thin team has been a widely debated subject since they secured entry to the European competition. Looking at the fixture list, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this capability. Regrettably for the away side, they seemed weary throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had attempted to rotate the squad with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines caused surprise.

Manchester City, in comparison, have fewer loading concerns. Jeglertz made one adjustment from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to accumulate for Skinner and his squad from the first whistle. This was a show of the strength from Manchester City whose energetic offense played with and tore United open with a superb initial 45 minutes showing that saw them net a trio in under half an hour.

This placed City completely dominant and had Manchester United struggling. In advance of this encounter, the away side had conceded just few in this WSL season but they disintegrated in the face of Manchester City's attacking flair.

Initial Opportunities

The omens came soon when Miedema used her physicality to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot past the post. They extended their lead with an additional two goals just before the break. When Rose was allowed to advance through the midfield from defense, the play opened up for the hosts. The influential Casparij received possession on the right side before delivering a pinpoint driven ball for Bunny Shaw to force home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a swift change in possession saw Lauren Hemp given the space to drive a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The most obvious adjustment came from Skinner at the half-time as Melvine Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Ex- City player Jess Park came most likely to score, rattling the woodwork, but the visitors were creatively abject and failed to register a solitary shot on target.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their lead when a superb Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it was insignificant to the hosts. Having failed to overcome any side who placed above them last season, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a favorable situation after the opening fixtures.
